Before You Start

Let’s talk about important parts of the recipe before you start…

Welcome to my Herb Baguette

Hello everyone, I am Tom the Chef, and I am thrilled to share my fantastic Herb Baguette with you today. If you need a quick and easy side dish, this 15-minute recipe will transform a simple loaf into a masterpiece. We are taking a large American baguette and making a crusty bread loaded with incredible flavor. By slathering the crumb with room temperature butter infused with herbs and sprinkling freshly grated parmesan on top, we create a savory side that you will absolutely love. Once we bake until golden, you will have the perfect crust. Let’s dive straight into making this incredible Herb Baguette together!

Choosing and Cutting the American Baguette for the Herb Baguette

The foundation of this 15-minute recipe is a large American baguette, ideally about 20 inches long. To prepare this crusty bread, I cut the baguette into four similar pieces. First, I cut it into two halves vertically, and then I cut each of those halves horizontally. This exposes a beautiful amount of the soft crumb inside, giving us the perfect surface area to soak up all the delicious flavors of our savory side. You could optionally add a modification like rubbing the raw edges with a fresh garlic clove, but please note that this is a modification that is not part of the recipe for this traditional Herb Baguette.

Using Room Temperature Butter for the Herb Baguette

One of the most crucial steps to ensure your easy side dish turns out flawlessly is using room temperature butter. For my Herb Baguette, I use exactly four tablespoons of herb butter, which can be either store-bought or homemade. Because the herb butter is softened to room temperature, I can use a simple butter knife or any dull knife to spread exactly one tablespoon evenly over the exposed crumb of each of the four baguette pieces without tearing the delicate bread. This gentle spreading guarantees that every single bite of this savory side gets that rich flavor baked right into the perfect crust.

The Perfect Seasoning: Grated Parmesan for the Herb Baguette

After spreading the soft herb butter, the next step in my 15-minute recipe brings a wonderful salty depth to the crusty bread. I take four tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese and carefully sprinkle exactly one tablespoon onto each piece of the American baguette. The grated parmesan melts beautifully into the herb butter while in the oven, creating an irresistible savory side. To balance the richness of the cheese and butter, I finish the seasoning with just a simple pinch of salt and a pinch of ground pepper evenly distributed on each piece before placing them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

Bake Until Golden: Achieving the Perfect Crust on the Herb Baguette

To finish the Herb Baguette, we must bake until golden. I always set the oven to preheat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit at the very beginning of the preparation. Once the four pieces of crusty bread are fully dressed with the soft herb butter, grated parmesan, salt, and pepper, I place the baking sheet in the preheated oven. I let it bake until it turns golden and crispy, which usually takes about seven to ten minutes. The ambient heat transforms the American baguette into a warm, crunchy delight with a perfect crust that holds up wonderfully to any meal.

Serving Suggestions for the Herb Baguette

Once you bake until golden, you have a versatile easy side dish ready to enjoy. One of the best things about my Herb Baguette is that it can be served either warm right out of the oven or served cold later on. This savory side pairs beautifully with hearty main dishes. I highly recommend serving this crusty bread alongside an American BBQ dinner featuring Honey Pork Ribs. It is also an extraordinary companion to a juicy Cowboy Steak or an elegant Filet Mignon served with a rich Demi-Glace Sauce. No matter how you choose to serve it, this 15-minute recipe is an absolute winner.
